Why Can’t I Sleep?

147586_alarm_clock.jpg(www.sass-pants.com) — It’s solidly the middle of the night here in Virginia and I am wide awake. Well, scratch that. When I’m vertical, I feel like I’m about to fall over from exhaustion. The moment I lie down, I feel like I could run a marathon.

Ever since my car accident, I’ve been having trouble sleeping. I just can’t get comfortable, or I wake up every hour or so for no apparent reason. I haven’t felt rested in a solid month. And tonight, I can’t stop thinking about poor Julius.

The normal things aren’t helping tonight: counting backwards from 100 in Spanish; trying to say the alphabet backwards; counting as high as I can without losing my place; trying to remember the lyrics to Disney songs in the order in which they appear in their respective movies; visualizing myself falling asleep from my toes to the top of my head; watching boring television. Nothing works.

What do you do when you can’t sleep?

When I can’t sleep, I just accept that I can’t sleep. I never look at the clock. Sometimes I lie there and focus on the rhythm of my husband’s breathing. Sometimes I think of faraway loved ones, visualize them, and hold them close in my mind…

My husband has sleeping troubles. When he can’t sleep, he gets up. He says that he’d rather be awake than lying there stressing over why he’s not sleeping. He’ll come downstairs, turn on the tv to some inane movie or show, turn the headphones to low and just drift off.

Don’t watch the clock. Don’t worry about why you’re awake. Just get up. It’s okay to give in to what the body wants.

@V-Grrrl, I tried concentrating on the rhythm of his breathing, but he was snoring and that just made me want to shove him off the bed. Probably not a good solution. ;)

@Lori, I figured better to be awake and doing things than awake and developing a physically negative reaction to lying in bed…

I get up and read or do some work. I try not to worry about the fact that I’m not sleeping and get something productive done. I’ve been having trouble sleeping recently – when I’m not passed out way too early ;-) But a lot of things have gone wrong recently so at least I know why I’m awake.

And shoving the snorer off the bed might not help you sleep, but it might make you feel better :-)
