Every week or two, I revisit childhood journals for hilariously awkward and occasionally mortifying stories. In this entry, I recap a a neighborhood barbecue and revise my summer to-do list (pictured).I’ve typed it exactly as written, except for replacing identifiable names with initials in searchable text.

“Celebrate Good Times!
Come on!”I’m having a great summer, so far. On Sat.17, I went to the Gilmore’s house. JH was there. Remember him? We went out in 5th grade.
Anyway, we played volleyball, talked and sa shared an ancient bench we thought would collapse any second, and sat nexto to each other on the Gilmore’s patio.During volleyball, I kept hitting the ball into a bush that was right next to the volleyball court.
“The bush isn’t playing, Kristen,” he kept telling me.
In the 2nd game, every time I did something good he’d exclaim, “Score 1 (or 2, or 3, etc.) for the cheerleader!”
Cute, huh? (I mean that sarcastically.) He really was quite friendly. I was surprised.
My mom later told met hat his dad (JH’s) said that JH is “always” talking abot about a girl named Kristen and someone named C.” Unfortunately, there are 2 Kristens and only 1 C. Oh well, maybe I’ll get lucky.

This entry is a weird one for me. I vividly remember the barbecue described and could probably drive back to the house where it took place. I could definitely sketch the back yard and list at least 60% of the people who were there. I remember conversations I had with JH and how much fun it was hanging out with him. (He wore a lot of rugby shirts, but that day was in a blue teeshirt if I recall correctly. Maybe it was gray. It was not a rugby shirt.) What I do NOT remember, was feeling sarcastic about thinking his “cheerleader” comments were cute. I thought that at the time I actually thought it was cute. I had a blast that day. Well, I thought I did. Now I’m not so sure.
Weirder still is my “updated” summer to-do list. The updates are:
- Adding all of the pictures.
- Editing from “Get an awesome tan.”
- Deleting “Enlarge my bust-line”
- Editing the money one to remove “I have two definite jobs already”
- Adding the ones about new clothes and decorating.
At the end of the day, I’d say my final list at 12 closely resembles my list at 31. (Oh, except these days, after losing 22 lbs post–nursing twins, I’ve re-inserted the one about enlarging my bust-line.) Also, I still love Kool & The Gang.
Analyze away!
