As part of our effort to create more structure in our family, we’re going back to basics with a list of daily tasks that need to be completed for each area of the house.
Here are the daily activities that keep our household running smoothly.
It may seem like a lot, but each one takes only a couple of minutes, max, if you do it every day, so it’s a tiny investment with huge return! We put the checklist in a clear sheet protector and hang it on our bulletin board with an erasable marker so we can check off items each day and always know what’s been done. Mostly I do bathroom and laundry stuff and Daddy-in-Training does kitchen and kid stuff, but we both kind of do whatever needs doing as soon as we see it needs to be done.
At almost 22 months, the kiddos are responsible for helping to pick up their toys / books, putting their clothes in the hamper, and helping to put their laundry in the washer and dryer. They’ve been doing these tasks, as well as specific things we ask them — “Please go put this in Brother’s bed. Please bring Mommy the wipes. Please go find your shoes.” — since about 12 months. Everything else on the list is for grownups.
Once the boys turn 2, they will receive their own sticker-based chore chart with pictures of their responsibilities. We are using The Happy Housewife’s Age-Appropriate Chores for Kids printable as our guideline.
