For families with twins, the ability to parent hands free is essential. I wouldn’t say babywearing saved my life, but it sure has made it a lot easier.
I routinely alternate which baby I wear when we are running errands, playing at the park, or just hanging out around the house. Now that they’re 13 months and getting heavy, I love to have them on my back. It keeps them entertained and out of the way of my hands while I go about my day. Unless I’m nursing, which is a VERY rare occurrence these days, back carry wins almost every time.
But sometimes, I need to wear both at once. The video after the jump shows my favorite way to tandem wear my twins.
Emmett is on my back in a Tula Toddler in “Happy Dills,” and Miles is on my chest in an Ergo Baby in Petunia Picklebottom “Evening at Innsbruck.” The boys are 13 months old and about 24 and 19 lbs, respectively.
Tips for making it easier:
- Always load the back baby first so the front baby’s head isn’t dangling while you lean forward to position the back baby.
- If you’re not comfortable with back carries yet, practice with a spotter and/or on a bed, couch, or the floor until you get the hang of it.
- If you have long, grabbable hair, put it in a high ponytail, braids, or scarf to prevent pulling. YES, Emmett, I am talking about YOU.
- Don’t be afraid to try different carriers to find the combo that works best for you.
Next time, I’ll show you a few more options for tandem wearing. What are your favorite babywearing solutions? Leave a comment.
I love the back carry with my Ergo and using a wrap in the front (I use a Moby, my smaller twin’s favorite) or a gauze wrap (perfectly light for Florida weather).
I am really fascinated with the idea of wrapping both babies but would feel more comfortable using two shorter wraps instead of one long wrap. I look forward to learning this someday!
Thanks for helping me master this SSC back carry — life has indeed gotten easier since!
Baby carriers is pretty perfect for twins. The three of you is surely comfortable.
